The hummingbird can fly forward, backward, and even upside down. Legends say that hummingbirds float free of time, carrying our hopes for love, joy, celebration and healing.

Grief Companion

The grief process or journey is unique to each person. Whether it is the loss of family member, pet, job or a change in life the grieving process is unique to the individual. There is no singular process, no certain path and there is no timeline for it to follow. In fact there may be many processes and paths interwoven with each other. And the duration of the journey is often not linear.

I believe it may be better described as an upward spiral. Often upward but sometimes downward, but always progressing. The key, if it can be called that, is to find a path that leads to healing. No matter whomever is gone or whatever is left behind, the survivors life will never be the same again. A healing journey to grieving can lead to a new life that is full though different.

A grief companion will walk with you on the journey. Often just listening and guiding, much like spiritual direction. There will be times for teaching of different processes. Even times to tell the grieving person to take a break, some time off. The direction will always be along a path of healing. As unique as the journey is to the individual so is the role for the grief companion.
